When you're camping or backpacking, bringing a reliable heat and light source can be challenging. This simple DIY hack shows you how to make a portable camping candle using just an Altoids container and a couple of small candles.
Whether you're planning a weekend getaway in one of our RV rentals or heading out on a backcountry adventure, this compact candle is perfect for emergency lighting, warming small spaces, or creating a cozy campsite atmosphere.
What You'll Need
- 1 empty Altoids container (any size works)
- 2 small candles (tea lights or votives)
- Small saucepan for melting wax
- Needle nose pliers
- Heat-safe surface for cooling
This project takes about 30 minutes from start to finish, and the result is a waterproof, portable candle that fits easily in your backpack or RV emergency kit. Watch the full tutorial video below:

Step 1: Empty the Altoids Container
Start by removing all the Altoids from the metal container. Save the mints for later or enjoy them before your trip!
If you already have an empty container on hand, you're ready to move on to the next step. The metal construction of Altoids tins makes them ideal for this project since they're fire-resistant and durable.
Step 2: Clean Out the Container
Altoids are great for fresh breath, but they leave behind a powdery residue. Thoroughly clean the container with a damp rag or rinse it with water.
Important: Make sure the container is completely dry before adding wax. Any moisture can cause the wax to splatter or not set properly.
Step 3: Melt the Candles
Place your candles in a small saucepan over low to medium heat. Stir occasionally until the wax is completely melted.
Once melted, carefully remove the wicks using needle nose pliers. Set these aside on a heat-safe surface as you'll need them for the next step. Be cautious when handling hot wax to avoid burns.
According to National Park Service fire safety guidelines, always practice caution when working with open flames and hot materials, especially in outdoor settings.
Step 4: Pour the Wax into the Altoids Container
Position the wicks in the container with the ends facing upward. You can place them side by side or space them evenly for better burning.
Pro tip: Hold the wicks in place with a pencil or small stick laid across the top of the container while pouring. This keeps them centered and upright.
Slowly and carefully pour the melted wax into the Altoids container. Fill it to about 1/4 inch from the top to prevent overflow when the lid is closed.
Step 5: Let the Wax Cool
Place the container on a flat, stable surface and allow the wax to cool completely. This typically takes 1-2 hours at room temperature.
For safety and to avoid spilling hot wax, do not move or close the container until the wax has fully hardened. You'll know it's ready when the surface is solid and cool to the touch.
If you're preparing for a camping trip, consider making several of these candles ahead of time. They store indefinitely and make great additions to your RV emergency kit.
Step 6: Use Your Portable Camping Candle
Your portable camping candle is now ready to use! Simply light the wicks when you need light or warmth at your campsite.
Safety Tips for Using Your Camping Candle
- Always place on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from flammable materials
- Never leave burning candles unattended
- Keep away from children and pets
- Extinguish completely before closing the lid or packing away
- Allow the tin to cool before handling after use
The compact size makes this candle perfect for backpacking, emergency preparedness, or keeping in your RV. When closed, the tin is waterproof and crushproof, protecting your candle during transport.
